Lavandula angustifolia (also called
Lavandula officinalis) is grown in Bulgaria and is valued worldwide for the properties of its flowers. Its delightful fragrance has made it a favorite for perfumes and cosmetics throughout history, beginning in ancient Rome. Lavender has been used medically for a variety of conditions including depression, fatigue, headaches, and rheumatism. It has recently been investigated as an anti-cancer treatment, a hair-loss preventative, regulating cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and in treating stomach upset. Lavender’s astringent and antiseptic properties have led to its use in treating skin irritation from sunburn and insect bites and soothing aches and pains. Its therapeutic benefits have been proven over the course of history and in modern studies, and it is useful as a sedative, relieving stress, lifting mild depression, calming motor activity, and improving sleep.
